Twenty questions, four centuries

This is a 20-question survey of American history, opening at the Mayflower and closing at the modern presidency. Between those two points it crosses the colonial period, the founding era, the wars that redrew the map, and the people who held the country’s highest office. It works as a general American history quiz rather than a specialist one: every question sits on ground the record settled long ago, and none of them depends on anything still in the news. The particulars the quiz asks for — the years, the places, the names — stay inside the questions themselves, so nothing on this page gives an answer away.

The answer key was built twice

Every answer traces back to a dataset written by two authors working independently: a catalog of 149 historical facts and a complete record of all 47 US presidencies. The two versions were compared key by key before a single question was generated. All 149 catalog facts matched, and every presidency record agreed on every field. Where the authors could not reconcile a record, that question was never written. This quiz only asks what both of them confirmed.
